Embedding Library Resources into Canvas

Info on using the Canvas Commons, permalinks, using library tutorials, sharing videos and more.

Permalinks Explained

 What is a permalink?

A permalink is a direct link to a resource that will allow you and your students to get back to it easily at any time.  Permalinks are necessary to use in Canvas because they force the library proxy to authenticate students off campus.  Incorrect links mean that students will not be able to access library resources.  Permalinks also matter due to licensing, copyright and fair use.

How is it different from the URL in the address bar at the top of my browser?

The URL in the address bar may not have all of the information needed to work later. This is especially true with library resources.  The permalink is usually available though a sharing or link icon on the upper right of the website or in text form at the bottom of an article or video.

Example of a Permalink:

 https://ezproxy.jccc.edu/login?url=http://fod.infobase.com/PortalPLaylists.aspx?wID=107

Create a Permalink

Some of our databases use permalinks that include a long, strange looking string of information in front of the actual URL. If, however, that information is NOT included in the permalink, you'll need to include it yourself. This ensures that students who are off campus are routed through our services, are asked to log in with their JCCC credentials, and can then, legally, access the document. Simply copy and paste the following in front of the article's URL (only if it's not already there!):

https://ezproxy.jccc.edu/login?url=

-OR-

To convert a URL, type (or copy and paste) it into the form and then click on the View Link button.

Test it!

Not sure if you've created a permalink correctly?  Before you put the link into Canvas, test it!

  • Try the link from off-campus, either at home or via a device not connected to the campus Wi-Fi.
  • Already logged into the library resources from home? Try a different browser.
  • Still not sure?  Save yourself and your students some frustration and ask a librarian to double check it for you.
