This novel is about an elderly man who lives in a nursing home, remembering his experiences in World War I where he lost his closest friends. He also meditates on his brief love affair with a woman who also lost her lover during the war. This is an excellent depiction of the indignities of old age.

A Nobel Prize winning author chronicles the fate of an Egyptian family from 1917 to 1944 in a trilogy of which this is the third volume. He presents a dynamic account of Egypt's social and political development. Each of the three novels can be read separately.
