Evaluating Material

Fake, False, and Incorrect Information

There are many resources, techniques, preventative measures put into place to help guide you through the minefield of information on the internet. Here are some tips and tools to keep in mind

  • When using a library database, limit your results to "peer reviewed." Peer reviewed means that the article has been through a rigorous approval process before being published. Almost all of JCCC's databases, and even Summon, will have the option to limit results to peer-reviewed
  • Look at ProQuest Research Companion for tips on evaluating resources. It also has a resource evaluator to help single out known scholarly and known bad resources in both print and the internet.
  • For a more detailed breakdown, check out the Fake News Guide put together at Indiana University - East.
