JCCC Writes: Celebrating JCCC Campus Authors

Mary J. Blige is an icon who represents the political consciousness of hip hop and the historical promise of soul. Danny Alexander follows the whole arc of Blige's career, from her first album, which heralded the birth of "hip hop soul," to her critically praised 2014 album, The London Sessions. He highlights the fact that Blige was part of the historically unprecedented movement of black women onto pop radio and explores how she and other women took control of their careers and used their music to give voice to women's (and men's) everyday struggles and dreams. This book adds immensely to the story of both black women artists and artists rooted in hip hop and pays tribute to a musician who, by expanding her reach and asking tough questions about how music can and should evolve, has proven herself an artistic visionary.

The Osage empire, as most histories claim, was built by Osage men's prowess at hunting and war. But, as Tai S. Edwards observes in Osage Women and Empire, Osage cosmology defined men and women as necessary pairs; in their society, hunting and war, like everything else, involved both men and women. Only by studying the gender roles of both can we hope to understand the rise and fall of the Osage empire. In Osage Women and Empire, Edwards brings gender construction to the fore in the context of Osage history through the nineteenth century. Edwards's examination of the Osage gender construction reveals that the rise of their empire did not result in an elevation of men's status and a corresponding reduction in women's. Consulting a wealth of sources, both Osage and otherwise--ethnographies, government documents, missionary records, traveler narratives--Edwards considers how the first century and a half of colonization affected Osage gender construction. She shows how women and men built the Osage empire together. Once confronted with US settler colonialism, Osage men and women increasingly focused on hunting and trade to protect their culture, and their traditional social structures--including their system of gender complementarity--endured. Gender in fact functioned to maintain societal order and served as a central site for experiencing, adapting to, and resisting the monumental change brought on by colonization. Through the lens of gender, and by drawing on the insights of archaeology, ethnography, linguistics, and oral history, Osage Women and Empire presents a new, more nuanced picture of the critical role of men and women in the period when the Osage rose to power in the western Mississippi Valley and when that power later declined on their Kansas reservation.

This book explores the resistance of three English poets to Francis Bacon's project to restore humanity to Adamic mastery over nature, moving beyond a discussion of the tension between Bacon and these poetic voices to suggest theywere also debating the narrative of humanity's intellectual path.

In the decades following the Civil War, scores of African Americans served in the U.S. Army in the West. The Plains Indians dubbed them buffalo soldiers, and their record in the infantry and cavalry, a record full of dignity and pride, provides one of the most fascinating chapters in the history of the era. This anthology focuses on the careers and accomplishments of black soldiers, the lives they developed for themselves, their relationships to their officers (most of whom were white), their specialized roles (such as that of the Black Seminoles), and the discrimination they faced from the very whites they were trying to protect. In short, this volume offers important insights into the social, cultural, and communal lives of the buffalo soldiers. The selections are written by prominent scholars who have delved into the history of black soldiers in the West. Previously published in scattered journals, the articles are gathered here for the first time in a single volume, providing a rich and accessible resource for students, scholars, and interested general readers. Additionally, the readings in this volume serve in some ways as commentaries on each other, offering in this collected format a cumulative mosaic that was only fragmentary before. Volume editors Glasrud and Searles provide introductions to the volume and to each of its four parts, surveying recent scholarship and offering an interpretive framework. The bibliography that closes the book will also commend itself as a valuable tool for further research.

This collection of poetry began as a response to Trump's tweets against Pakistan as well as his remarks against El Salvador, Haiti, and Africa. Instead of an angry response, I aimed to create tiny meditations on the lovely parts of the places I have been.Initially, I wrote the poems in pairs, one for Pakistan and one for El Salvador. Later, I added poems from a visit to Kenya. In this collection, I also added previous poems about my childhood in El Salvador. When I wrote these poems, I tried to find and replace the obscenity with "love." I hope that you will, too.

This collection of short, narrative poems explores the diverse ways people may assert themselves. Most of the poems come from the feminine point of view. In the title poem, the author pretends she put someone in their place during book club. In a later poem, she asserts herself by not leaving a tip. The poet wrestles with aging and with allowing herself permission to occupy space.

The title appears in a phrase in the poem "Simplicity," in which the author's sons pick up quartz rocks on a beach and pretend they are dragons' eggs and are "soooo happy." Those who read these mostly brief, accessible, understated, deceptively simple poems will be rewarded by finding many gems throughout and will also find delight. The range of experience presented is impressive as are the writer's fresh observations. In the final poem, "The New Mythology," she writes about her grandfather's sorrow over the loss of a child and of his happiness at her (the author's) birth. The first grandchild, she is "the jewel in the new mythology." Throughout the book many gems in the experiences that make up her developing mythology glimmer." -Patricia Lawson

Beth Gruver Gulley captures it all: the truth in the words of a poem that once "just rolled like a chocolate drop" from her 6th grade tongue, the amazing gift of a twenty dollar bill in "the pocket of some forgotten jeans," the way someone's eyes light up when she enters a room. All those incredibly precious moments we might not note, much less celebrate, had Corona not ruined our trip to the library; had we not lived in a time when we dared not assume we'd make it to summer. Yes, we humans are absurdly inconsistent. We invest in the future with purchases of coffee and snacks and "stamps from the US Postal Service" while insisting that our youth set goals, plan steps for a future we hope to enjoy; do-gooders are do leave a daunting task of cleaning up a nature trail for another day.
