What is academic integrity?

Students with academic integrity demonstrate honest and moral behavior in an academic setting by doing and taking ownership of their own work, while also giving credit to others for their ideas, thoughts, work, and analysis.  JCCC places a high priority on academic integrity.  Not only is it necessary for learning to take place, but it also ensures the quality of information being taught at the institution.  Integrity is an important skill students learn in higher education that they will take with them and use throughout their professional careers.

When to Cite

Sometimes it can be difficult to determine when an in-text citation is needed.  Below are some basic rules to help.

Cite when:

  • You are directly quoting a source
  • You are summarizing and/or paraphrasing

Don't cite when:

  • You are stating your own thoughts and conclusions
  • You are stating common knowledge

This flowchart from Purdue's Online Writing Lab can also help when deciding whether or not you need a citation.
