Academic Integrity

What is academic integrity?

Students with academic integrity demonstrate honest and moral behavior in an academic setting by doing and taking ownership of their own work, while also giving credit to others for their ideas, thoughts, work, and analysis.  JCCC places a high priority on academic integrity.  Not only is it necessary for learning to take place, but it also ensures the quality of information being taught at the institution.  Integrity is an important skill students learn in higher education that they will take with them and use throughout their professional careers.

How can academic integrity be violated?

JCCC lays out clear guidelines within the Student Code of Conduct on academic dishonesty, cheating, and plagiarism.  While the majority of this website focuses on plagiarism, it is important to highlight the other ways in which the Code of Conduct can be broken.  Examples of cheating and academic dishonesty can include, but are not limited to:

  • Getting test or homework answers from another student
  • Sharing test or homework answers with other students
  • Using group messaging (ex: GroupMe) during a test to receive from or distribute answers to others
  • Using information found on cheating websites (ex: Chegg, Course Hero) and passing the answers off as your won
  • Using AI to generate answers and submitting the text (even if slightly altered) as your own

Please note, each faculty member can have additional guidelines around academic dishonesty, cheating, and plagiarism that pertain only to their class.  Pay close attention to course syllabi for more information.
