Academic Integrity

Cultural Differences in Plagiarism

In the United States and other Western cultures, plagiarism is considered a serious academic offense.  But in other parts of the world, using ideas, thoughts, or even whole parts of someone else’s work, without referencing the original author, is completely permissible.  The United States protects the work of individuals and citing the work of these individuals is the way students can respect and honor the academic work of others.  Though you may have encountered different rules about plagiarism at a different academic institution, remember that plagiarism is not tolerated at JCCC.
