Plagiarism in the Real World

If you type "plagiarism" or "cheating" into Google, hundreds of news articles populate about real-world cases of plagiarism in everything from the entertainment industry to politics.  Stories include authors who use portions of other's work and claim it as their own, journalists who make up statistics, and even songwriters who are accused of creating songs that too closely resemble other songs.

In these cases, people either did not do their own original work or did not properly give credit to those whose work they were referencing.  Plagiarism has real-world effects outside of school and often the consequences in the real-world are serious, such as loss of reputation, loss of a job, and even revoking of a degree.

Below are a few examples of the consequences of cheating in the real-world:

  • A video game company including anti-cheating software to try and prevent unfair advantages amongst players
  • One of the "big four" accounting firms reveals that their employees were cheating on ethics exams
