Johnson County and the broader Kansas City metro area support a vibrant art scene and offer numerous opportunities for the public to explore and enjoy contemporary art.

Museums

  • Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center: features rotating exhibitions of contemporary and modern art from local, regional, and national artists. All art exhibitions are free to view by the public.
  • Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art: the Kemper boasts an acclaimed and rapidly growing collection of modern and contemporary works from around the world. All art exhibitions are free to view by the public; currently, you must reserve tickets online prior to your visit.
  • Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art: the Nelson-Atkins' encyclopedic collection includes an outstanding collection of international contemporary art, housed in the Bloch building. General admission is free to the public; additionally, over 900 works of contemporary art can be accessed online.

  • National Endowment for the Arts: the Endowment's blog, podcasts, and magazine feature stories about contemporary art and artists from across the country.
  • Smithsonian American Art Museum: the Smithsonian American Art Museum covers three centuries of American art. Much of their collection can be viewed and explored online through images, blogs, and videos.
